The Baltic region (which includes parts of Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) is home to the largest known deposit of amber, called succinite (Baltic amber). Dating from 44 million years ago (the Eocene epoch), the forest of the region is thought to have created more than 100,000 tons of this fossilized tree sap. Even today, more than 90% of the world’s amber comes from Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia.
