Norse mythology has many tales related to dragons (or dreki in Old Norse). In fact, the term dreki was also used to describe the great Viking longships, where the prow was often carved in the likeness of a dragon. The most famous od the dreki is Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent. A child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, Jörmungandr was tossed by Odin into the great ocean that encircled the human world. Over time, the serpent grew until it surrounded the Earth and was able to bite its own tail.
