Our Celtic Axe Pendant features a stylized Viking axe with intricate Celtic carvings, hand-cast in sterling silver. The necklace pendant measures 1.5 inches tall and comes with a sterling silver chain in 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
In Viking myth, the ancient god Forseti (Old Norse for “the presiding one”) represented justice and honor. According to Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, Forseti possessed an unmatched skill for mediation and reconciliation. From his shining hall Glitnir (“one who shines”), he would dispatch justice by choosing words over violence.
In one medieval legend, Charlemagne summons the twelve Āsegas (“law-speakers”) of the Frisian people. When they failed the emperor’s test of knowledge, Charlemagne had them set adrift in a rudderless boat. The Āsegas prayed for help, their pleas answered by a radiant man with a golden axe on his shoulder. Revealing himself to be Forseti, the man steered the boat to land with the axe. He then threw the axe ashore, and a spring welled up where it landed. He taught them the new laws of the land, then disappeared.
