Our Celtic Unicorn Pendant features a classic unicorn profile with delicate Celtic flourishes, hand-cast in sterling silver. The necklace pendant measures 1.5 inches tall and comes with a sterling silver chain in 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
For nearly 500 years, the Unicorn has been the national symbol (and later, the national animal) of Scotland. In the mid-1500s, the unicorn first appeared on the royal coat of arm of Scotland. Originally, the coat featured a unicorn on either side of the Rampant Lion shield. In 1603, during the Union of the Crowns, King James VI of Scotland became James I of England as well. To acknowledge the uneasy unity between the two countries, the English lion replaced one of the Scottish unicorns. This one-of-each design remains unchanged today. The unease continues, however as myth suggests that the lion and the unicorn — known as mortal enemies — are forever locked in battle for the crown of “King of the Beasts.”
