A Celtic Victoria Cross Pendant featuring an elegant cross pattée inscribed with Celtic designs, hand-cast in sterling silver
Our Celtic Victoria Cross Pendant features an elegant cross pattée inscribed with Celtic designs, hand-cast in sterling silver. The necklace pendant measures 1.125 inches across and comes with a sterling silver chain in 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
The Victoria Cross is a style of cross pattée — a type of Christian cross with arms that are narrow at the center and flare in a straight line to be broader at the perimeter. The design approximates a Maltese Cross or early Cross Templar, but with trumpeting arms and flat ends at the extremes.
Following the Crimean War, soldiers returned home with tales of their comrades’ bravery and sacrifice. Queen Victoria instructed the War Office to create a new medal, one that would be eagerly sought after by those serving in the military. Her request stated that the Victoria Cross would be awarded to officers and men — regardless of birth or station — who had performed some signal act of valour in battle. In June of 1857, the Queen awarded the first Crosses to soldiers from the Crimean conflict.
