Our Epona Horses Pendant features a trio of Celtic horses around a triskelion design hand-cast in sterling silver. The necklace pendant measures 1.25 inches across and comes with a sterling chain in 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
A symbol of power, strength and fertility, the horse was a vital part of early nomadic Celtic communities. The goddess Epona, also known as the White Mare Goddess, rode through the night skies on a white horse, fleeing from the sun. In other cultures she was similar to the nature goddess Rhiannon of the Mabinogion.
Epona also protected women as a guardian of fertility. Images of her often include a patera, grain, a cornucopia or young foals. Parallel to the horse riding Valkyrie of Norse myth, she served as a guide for souls seeking peace in the afterlife. Unlike most of the Celtic deities who were nearly forgotten during Roman rule, Epona survived. In fact, she was thought to be the only Celtic goddess who was eventually worshipped in Rome.
The three horses of the Epona triskelion (or triple spiral) comprise a classic design from Celtic antiquity.
