The Lion Rampant of Scotland (formally known as the Royal Banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland) was used by the King or Queen of Scots throughout history and is the personal banner of the monarchs. The earliest recorded use of the Lion as a royal emblem was in 1222 by Alexander II. It was used by the King of Scots until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. Today the Rampant Lion can be found across Scotland, typically in red with a red heraldic border and a vivid yellow background.
