The Viking Longboat

Viking longboats originated in Scandinavia and Iceland for trade, exploration, and warfare during the Viking Age. The overall design evolved over the centuries, as seen in the Nydam and Kvalsund ships. The style varied, depending on the ship’s purpose. Generally, however, they boasted a slender and flexible shape with symmetrical ends with true keel. Some might have boasted a dragon’s head or other impressive figurehead, but these are mostly attributed to legend.
