Our Celtic Owl Pendant features a delicate owl perched in a wreath of twigs, hand-cast in sterling silver. The necklace pendant measures 1.1 inches across and comes with a sterling silver chain in 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
In Celtic myth, owls (or cauileach-oidhche, literally white old woman of the night in Scottish Gaelic) represent the wise hunter and granter of otherworldly insight. In fact, another term for owls in Irish is scréachóg reilige, which translates as the shrill graveyard bird.
While owls don’t’ appear often in the most popular Scottish myths, they have a reputation for sharp vision and quick, silent attacks. Their keen sight helps them guide seekers through the underworld, and their wisdom lets them see through most deception.
One myth dealing with the owl is the tragedy of Lleu and Bloudeuwedd. Forbidden by his mother to marry any ordinary woman, the enchanted Lleu entreats the magician Gwydion to create him a wife from the most beautiful of flowers. When Bloudeuwedd, Lleu’s new wife, falls unfaithful, she plans her husband’s demise. Although her plan fails, Gwydion curses her by turning her into an owl, the bird shunned by all other birds.
