Our English Dragon Hair Pin features a traditional Arthurian dragon design, cast in base metal and pewter with a very light silver wash. The body of the pin measures 2.5 inches across by 1.75 inches tall. It comes complete with a cross stick.
The great venomous serpent (beithir-nimh in Scottish Gaelic) often appeared on Summer nights during lightning strikes. The closest thing to a Western dragon in Scottish mythology, beithir began life as dead serpents. If a snake were beheaded and the head weren’t separated from the body by enough distance, the halves would come back together. As the sun set, a beithir would be born.
Like most creatures in Highlands lore, the creature only served to kill the unwary traveller. While unable to breathe fire, the beithir possessed a venomous stinger and typically hunted among the caves and crags along the Highlands. According to legend, any person stung by a beithir must race the serpent to the nearest body of water. If the victim won, their life was spared. Should the beithir win, the victim would die.
