According to classical myth, Eros clipped the fingernails of his mother, the goddess Aphrodite, as she slept. The fates turned these clippings into stone, thus the name “onyx” derived from the Greek word “onux” for “fingernail.” Originally, all colors of chalcedony were referred to as onyx. The Romans later narrowed the definition to just the black or darkest brown stones.
