Our Scottish Shield Enamel Pendant features a stylized Scottish flag over a shield in full color enamel. The necklace pendant measures approximately 1 inch across and comes with a stainless steel chain in 18 or 20 inches. A customer favorite!
From the 12th century, images of St. Andrew being crucified on a decussate (diagonal) cross appeared on seals and other official documents. When the Scottish nobles appealed to the Pope to recognize Scotland’s independence, they cited the nation’s conversion to Christianity under Andrew. In 1385, the Parliament of Scotland decreed that every Scottish and French soldier fighting against Richard II shall bear the standard of a white St. Andrew’s Cross.
In 1606, James I ruled over the united crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland. On April 12 of that year, he debuted a new flag that combined the red cross of England and the white saltire of Scotland for maritime purposes. The current design of this flag — the Union Jack — dates from 1801. The flag mimics the earlier flag but includes the red saltire of Ireland.
